My maximum weight was 220 pounds at 5’’feet 2’’ inches tall when I was 20 years old. I never really had a weight problem till then, but my father and my aunt are obese, so it seems pretty hard to avoid genetically. By the time I got to 220, my life was very unhappy and miserable and my self esteem was completely gone. I found my self looking for a ways to get out of this over weight body. Trying to loose weight on my own was a failure experience. I didn’t want to do anything unhealthy like diet pills, but I wasn’t having any success dieting, and being overweight made it hard to exercise. Ever since I was a young child I have suffered from Scoliosis, so being over weight made it even worse by having terrible back pain almost every day. In November of 2006, I saw Dr. Owens & his great staff. This was one of best things that could ever happen to me. I began to learn so much about the world of bariatric surgeries. This information gave me so much hope for a success at weight loss. Seeing patients come in to see Dr. Owens for their post op follow-ups with big smiles in their faces made me realized that they are no longer miserable. They are enjoying a great journey to a healthy life. I had weight loss surgery in the back of my mind for about a year, but I thought about weight loss surgery seriously for only a few months while I researched it. I knew it was the healthiest decision for me. Unfortunately, my insurance company denied coverage. I had Healthnet/ Molina. My primary care physician thought the surgery was unnecessary. He thought I should be able to lose weight on my own. I decided that my health and happiness was worth investing in; I paid cash for my surgery. Gastric Sleeve: I chose Gastric Sleeve, because to me it was less complicated than Gastric Bypass. The whole re-routing of the intestines was not appealing to me. I based my decision on a comparison chart the Coastal staff gave me.  My life was changed on the day of surgery. The Gastric Sleeve has changed me from size 22 to a size 13. I have lost over 60 pounds in almost 4 months. I feel happy, my life changed I can now go for walks without loosing my breath after the first five steps and my kids can now give me a complete bear hug not a half a hug. The back pain is now completely gone and shopping is fun. I didn’t tell my children ahead of time that I was going to have surgery I didn’t want them to worry.
